74Hello everyone!
This week, we decided to go over the very basics of the game.
Castle Story is not a regular voxel based game because in our case every voxel is bound to a few rules that changes its behavior. These behaviors are what allows you to build complex structures.

This is a brick. It measures 1×2 units. It is the basic building material in Castle Story.

Why is it not a cube? Wouldn’t cubes be easier to manipulate?

Because building castles with cubes would be meaningless. They can only be stacked on top of each other.

Building castles with 1×2 bricks is much more challenging because the blocks will hold each other up if you alternate them correctly.

Lets go back to the cube wall and see what happens when we delete one of the cubes.

An entire column breaks up.

Now if the wall is made of alternating 1×2 bricks, it stays up because the bricks are still resting on another one.

As long as a brick rests on top of another one it will stay put. This way you can take away much more without losing the structure.

In this case, the challenge rests in how well you can alternate the bricks on themselves.

You can come upon puzzling choices. The decision is yours to make.

So by having 1×2 bricks, you can build more complex structures than you would be able to with 1×1 blocks.
So this was a very basic overview. We know some of you we yearning for some technical stuff, this is why next week, we will talk about the technical aspect of building a voxel-based game.
See you next week!
Do want this game!
yes i would love to have this game
Rectangle bricks definitely make the building mechanic more interesting and varied than square bricks would have allowed. Can’t wait for the full release.
whaha so awesome, it will be the best game this year :) but one question, why not both blocks? so you can decide, would be good for columns
They have that.
They’re called halfblocks, and they use them in the Alpha Demo.
Thank you.
i cant wait for this… i wanna see some combat footage :D
can’t wait. I wanna get it the first day :D
Yaaaay, an update! =)
I like it. ^^ Very promising, I can already see all kinds of interesting defense designs. Pray tell, how does building(verb) behave in terms of physics? Will the game let us know if something is unstable before we build it, or will it bi a trial-error type of thing? Can we tell the yellow fellas to go build something, only to witness them plummet to their doom because the wall they were building couldn’t support their weight?
Anyway, keep up the great work, and I’m looking forward to more info!
Hello dear grandchildren.
This is your grandpa posting a comment in the development phase of that awesome game that you and all your friends play now.
I know, grandpa is awesome.
LOL
So awesome! Thank you so much for listening to the community and doing weekly updates! Will they be the same day every week?
Most likely
While you’ve mirrored real life in having rectangular blocks, it’s also true that bricklayers use half-bricks (cubes) in real life quite a lot.
While this is true (general contractor here), very few bricklayers are building structures that have to survive an assault. What we’ll eventually see is people building 2-4 brick thick walls with structurally sound passageways through them as necessary for archery and such. Cubic blocks will certainly be a very important element of their construction, but they will in no way be primary support elements.
1) While you have a point, it should be considered that modern bricklaying is not the same as medieval castle building. Among other things, many ancient castles were built without mortar, and relied on the weight of the bricks to maintain integrity (whereas modern buildings use concrete as glue).
2) Actually, all bricklayers build to survive assault by earthquakes, storms, structural defects and so on.
Looking great! How about video tutorials? I know a guy that loves to make em! :)
Now who would that be?
No way it could be you *sarcasm*
very nice indeed, i like the one at the end, gets the creative juices flowing for some interesting structures, cant wait to hear more!
Can’t wait for the demo, good luck!
Me and my friends are looking forward to this game! Can’t wait for a demo/beta, I’ll be applying.
me too
i love how this is going, now since this game seems to embrace structures, would it be possible to have some sort of support pillers? like dog down a bit in the ground to overall improve the stability of structures, like how builders pour cement to prevent dammage form natural desasters thingyies floods and what not but basicly to support the structure better
Maybe even get the little guys to start using steel in building construction? Would be an interesting addition to a tech tree of some sort.
oh yea how about like a little thingy that lets you research or something and so you get more iron when you mine or steel whatevs
WHY DOES YOUR WEBSITE NOT ACCEPT MY MONEY ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH
i want to know that too
Would you consider adding a template lab so we can design structures that can be placed multiple times into the world? I think this would add a great deal of utility to the design aspect if you can place, lets say a number of towers, in the world without having to lay them out brick by brick each time.
That is pure genius, especially if you were creating elaborate structures with repeating patterns. +1 for customizable template or some copy and paste feature
I must say I’m impressed of that idea!
+1 more from me
YES! This is exactly how I wanted the game to play. The added difficulty of having to work around the physics is extremely compelling. :)
[...] guys have now started to reveal a little more about the basics of the game, with a 101 on bricks revealing that blocks will have physics. A post about the technical aspects of the game is due [...]
I have a question about wood ;P Is the going to be same kind of wood building ?
I already knew that information about blocks, See? LEGO is educational.
I want this game so bad!!!
Interesting. This will make building fun.
How about 2×2 or 3×3 blocks, as an option. With those we could build quadrilateral symmetric pillar arches.
OMG TAKE MY MONEY GOD DAMMIT!!!!
Nice. :)
But would you matter to show us another video?
Because I’m bored of all these videos being a copy of that single one you posted…
Also, what’s the point of “arch blocks” that I saw in the menu in the video?
I wonder…. would water be implemented in future or is such a thing unfit and simply inapropreate for a game like this? Also this game is already so increadibly awesome I can hardly wait to see and buy it when its 100% complete.
Do want so badly!
This is looking awesome.
Btw, some things I wanted to say about the blog page itself: it’d be a lot easier if the “leave a reply” is at the top and it goes from the most recent to the oldest, and also, the RSS does not seem to work.
Awesome job :) Looking forward for more information.
[...] out of destructible voxels, that is about as far as it goes. The whole blog post can be read on the official Sauropod Studios blog and more information about Castle Story can be found on the official website. You may be interested [...]
i will buy no mater what4
Me too !!
One thing that worries me is if you run out of island to build and gather materials on.
You will Be Able to build Bridges to other islands!
i mean if you cleared all islands
So will this game be like Age of Empires + Minecraft?
Looks exciting so fat. I can’t wait!
I really want to see how complicated my castle could get… Maybe with traps and support weapons? :-)
Wow :)
Seems youre getting even more realistic then stronghold.
And that with a way more innovative system.
Love it and that work too.
Can’t wait to make a german Lets Play / Tutorial series of these.
Since you appear intent to allow complicated structures, what kind of visualization strategy do you have in mind? Transparent floors and walls? Hide all layers above X? Hide all layers closer than distance X from camera?
This also becomes important with regard to tunnels, which I seem to recall you mentioned as possible.
How does your physics work? Is there torque, or will a construction remain in place so long as the tiniest bit of it rests on something? (i.e the castle resting on a stick) What about earth? Does soil cave in if you dig out a very wide cavern, or is it like the current Dwarf Fortress cave in system?
Also a few other things:
1) You refer to voxels but aren’t these technically just normal polygon-based objects?
2) Please make it easy to create new blocks of arbitrary shape. For instance, in the T-wall example you provided, an L or T shaped block would be very helpful, especially for aesthetics.
This is so awesome, every time you post something you’re teasing me! :D
I really can’t wait for the ETA, does anyone know whether it will be 1 month or 1 year before they release a beta or alpha?

I am looking forward to this game :-)
If you guys would put 1/10 of the time you spend making these blogs on actually writing the game
it would fucking be finished by now….
No need to be a hater.. Great job guys I can’t wait to give you all my money!
we do apologize good sir, the game will be deliver to your door tomorrow morning.
I WILL GIVE YOU MY WALLET PLEASE LET ME JUST PLAY AROUND WITH IT. I WILL PAY MONEY AND SEXUAL FAVORS.
Im going crazy, I can not wait to play this. To build all the awesome towers and castles and stuff :)
Looks like an interesting game. I hope there’s some action in it – perhaps you could take direct control of the BrickTrons? Anyway, just a thought. Looks like a really interesting game. I also like the colorful graphics – keep up the good work, developers.
Shut up and take my money!
great 101 was really interesting and cool to read, any chance that these could be in videos, so we can see more of this awesome game in action
Hey guys Im totally looking forward to this game.
If I might advice you something – Im willing (and I bet Im not the only one) to support you by some spare cash, so I think it would be a good idea to make some PayPal pay button or something like that :)
Keep it there guys, cant wait for it!
Please release a demo soon please.
