60Ok, so this weekend is national holiday here in Québec. We spent all week cooped up in our office, suffering through the latest heatwave without air conditioning. So we will be parting ways to go see friends and families, celebrate the Saint-Jean Baptiste, scream in the streets against our government just a bit, and in my case, rest my wrists and knees after a moving automobile tried to get intimate while I was riding my bike this afternoon.
This is why we are keeping the blog short and sweet this week.
But do not mistaken the little amount of words in this blog post for a lack of progress on our Kickstarter. On the contrary, Amazon Payment has been benevolent enough to deem our most recent legal papers acceptable and now allows us to start the sign-up procedure. Once done, we will be speaking to the Kickstarter people directly.
Among many enhancements to our game, we have also implemented shadows this week, and the results are quite satisfying. This was not a very hard task, to be honest, but it required us to adjust a few of our shaders, and tweak some shots for our trailer. See for yourself:

Anyway, this is all for now!
National holiday requires me to put up some local talent on this blog. So here we go, Close to Paradise by Patrick Watson. Welcome to a weird and completely trippy soundscape – don’t lose yourself.
Have a good weekend!
Short and Sweet… Nice. Not too much this week, but I just like to see the game being worked on. Nice job, guys.
I would pay a little bit extra in the kickstarter for some more fancy hats for the little dudes. Just saying.
Any chance this game will allow for modding in it’s future?
Thanks!
“Kickstarter is so close that we can smell it” – as you said in a blog post exactly 2 MONTH ago.
Blog posts are getting smaller, amount of comments fall… yea, lets release the game when 0 people will be waiting for it, no matter, cause it’ll be full and done. Open indev version to raise the heat on the game? Haha we’d better troll people and make them rage cause of waiting.
The next week blogpost is going to be like “we haven’t done anything important again. see you guys!”
This will be fun)
Rick, go eat a dick, they’re allowed to enjoy holidays, and they’ve already talked about having more issues with Kickstarter than they expected.
Chillax bro! They’re giving us A LOT more info than most devs give about their games.
If you want something badly, you need to be able to wait for it. If you’re rage quitting, well then you probably don’t care much about the game anyway.
They haven’t done anything important? Have YOU ever created a game before? Try to finish it in the 2 months you made so clear to all of us.
“They haven’t done anything important? Have YOU ever created a game before? Try to finish it in the 2 months you made so clear to all of us.”
You joking? Nothing important have been implemented in a game for the last 2 months, and the game was already ok 2 and 3 month ago… “try finishing a game in 2 monts” i repeat: IT WAS ALREADY “ALMOST DONE” ALOOOT OF TIME AGO.
I feel like talking to 13year-old kids thet are talking about what they don’t know. I’m not going to eat a dick from FUNNY joke of Zach. And I know Blackbox and Turbo pascal, as NOONE OF YOU, HATERS DO.
Sauropod should thank me, whith my comment I rase the popularity of blogpost more then it does itself!
Congratulations on being the biggest asshole on the planet, Rick! Games take time, and you keep saying that they’ve implemented nothing important. But Bugfixes ARE important. If all they did were cool new features to show on the blog, the final game would be a piece of shit. So stop complaining and be patient, they also need to sort out the legal stuff for the Kickstarter.
Though poorly worded by Rick, I do agree that I am growing a bit worried about the amount of people that will still be following progress on this game after all this time.
But let’s stay positive, the game just looks too good to not do well on the Kickstarter….. right?
Thanks Tanksenior, just the only guy who haven’t gone offensively and understood what I’m trying to say.
I predict MORE rage and hatered replyes here. No matter what, I won’t change my mind, *talking to sauropod* You guys have practically finished game long time ago. Shadows or some other unimportant stuff is not what game won’t live without, It was working fine even 2 month ago. iIm talking about as unnessesary pulling time. I refuse to believe that making a couple of signs and paper documents just to open a kind of “buisness” takes 2+ month. You see by yourself that NOW game is practically finished, so you implement something 1 in a time of a WHOLE WEEK, and i guess, just sitting and resting, doing nothing and waiting when your paper work will be done. I know it takes time for a paperwork. I know. But it doest takes YOUR time. You can do other things when your papers proceed. And implementing 1 thing in a week is… Idk…
To an extent, I agree with your first post, Rick. However, that was quite inconsiderate. Imagine working through Christmas week and then being told you are being lazy. How would you feel? And if they had released it when you said it was ready, can you imagine how much hate it would get because you have to put in your own characters?
Pachydermus, they say “Ok, so this weekend is national holiday here in Québec.”
Weekend. Not the whole week.
I’m not talking about THIS week only. All recent weeks same story.
These guys dont owe as anything… (at least not yet ;) )
sorry but the game wasn’t ready 2 month ago. Or if a broken game is the game that gamers want these days. it’s not because in our video everything was working fine that it was ready.
People need to remeber that creating a game takes time and we are still a very small team. I know it’s long and everyone would like to have the game on their computer like a year ago but I totally refuse to give something that don’t work to our players.
The Kickstarter is the major problem yet, because we are canadian it takes a lot of paperwork to be done. We thought it would be simple but sadly it isn’t.
finally, it is our first game, we wern’t ready for that popularity but we changed our live to make that game realizable, some of us quit their jobs to work all week on that project so please be indulgent. We are working hard on it and we want to do it right.
Okay okay, I’ll stfu cause I want too fking much from everyone. I wanted to write all this some weeks ago, and this week just blown up already set bomb in my brain. Sorry me for this impulse. Let’s just tell the truth, we all are checking blogposts not cause we wont to know every single move that have been done by you, but cause we want to know release date, or see a trailer, or click an implemented kikstarter link, or whatever big. Every week I’m waiting for midnight in Monreal and reuploading the page every 5 seconds, looking forward to watch the trailer or donate to kickstarter, but when I see this 13 strings of text (or some other amount on other weeks) again and again I’m going crazy… I loved first blogposts, where a ton of implemented things were summed with 2 tons of screenshots, for example when you implemented logs and planks.
Yea I said everything I wanted, someone understood someone not. It’s always easier to say that this Rick is so impatiend and silly and stuff, and that he doesn’t understand how the damn hard to create the game in already working engine. I remeber times when i was trying to do games in Turbo pascal, starting from zero and writing around thousand strings of code, yes there were no 3d and graphics, not much bugs and stuff, so I think your work is even harder, I can’t complain exactly.
All what I’m trying to tell that I know how hard it is and how many time it takes.
I just HOPE that you are keeping in secret some really cool things and when we watch the trailer we will say “omg, this game is now 3 times better then it was in a demonstration video!!!”, and you maybe done some more then shadows, but can’t tell us. I hope. So, bye. Just release it, I will be still waiting.
To your first point, I can agree somewhat, but my dad deals with management issues like this a lot, so I’m giving them the benefit of the doubt. But after that, you just started incoherently babbling.
I don’T see what is incoherent, they jsut want to give us a game that’s working and not a piece of trash that will crash on us all the time.
Someone said it and now it’s in my mind- I sincerely hope this game supports modding. Modding can be the difference between a very good game that washes out of existence and a great game that can live much much longer. I know I wouldn’t be playing Morrowind still if it wasn’t for modders a decade later.
The Knights look sooooooooooo……ooooo……ooooooo COOOL!!!
And so do the archers.
YAY!
I honestly hadn´t noticed the lack of shadows till now… :) leaves me to ask: do you have to film the entire trailer again, just to get the shadows for it? ;-)
nice pic by the way!
Kickstarters take a long time. Sauropod studio have been running in to lots of problems and delays, though, and have only been able to polish the game for a long time, since they can’t start on bigger features if the kickstarter would be coming close. As in most kickstarters for games, you will get the game when paying a certain amount, and that will be an updating indev version, not the full game when it’s finished.
They want to release the game when it’s fun and playable. When the video was posted, you had to place bricktrons and stock piles yourself, and could only build basic stone bricks, vaults, and stairs. They could have released an indev version already then, but now they’ve been able to work on the game in their own pace, and it’s looking better than ever :)
Those Shadows look awesome, good work, short blogs don’t matter. I mean as long as we can see you guys are still working on the game and getting stuff done, even if its a small amount we’re happy
Looks like a great game! Can’t wait for the Kickstarter!
Please Sauropod at least give us a video of the game
Shadows …nice work!
Why did you tell the people for this game probably 5 months before finishing it?It would be a lot easyer for you to
keep the whole secret about the game 2 weeks before the oficall release of the game!
By the way you haven’t waysted your time with the shadows!I like how they are really detailed!
yes we are aware of that now. We wanted first to see how the game was viable in term of audience and we were’nt expecting that huge tsunami of fans. Next time we will be more carefull about releasing any informations on our projects.
I think that you didn’t done any mistake by launching preview of the game. You’ve got the knowlegde now that a lot of people is waiting for the game and it’s worth to shift all your forces to finish it. It’s normal that people will start complain harder and harder due to long time waiting :) You’re doing great job. Don’t try to release anything too fast being forced by comlaining players (i’ve made such a mistake already :) ). Developing big game always takes 2x or 3x more time than you’re expecting.
thanks, we are more of a ”when it’s ready” approach anyway. so even if there is complaint about how long it takes we will release it when we think it’s ready to be released that’s all :)
thanks for your support again !
I still fail to understand why people love being sooooooo patient for big companies, but give ridiculous deadline standards to indies trying to make something with quality and quantity.
Because, big companies give an expected release date/year, Sauropod Studio has done nothing of the sorts.
Just my 2 cents
”Because, big companies give an expected release date/year ”
let say we didn’t read that. it a little bit wierd to think like that when like a lot big title expected this year have been resheduled for next one.
“let say we didn’t read that. it a little bit wierd to think like that when like a lot big title expected this year have been resheduled for next one.”
But nonetheless they’ve told when to expect the game. You’ve given us no date, not even an expectet year. For all we know it could be several years before this game is released.
You coule give an estimated Q release date.
Sorry but I must take their side about about something. I’m still waiting without rage BGE2 but when I learned that Tomb Raider was finally next year I was just frustrated. I prefer not having a date than having a false one.
Plus, they already talked about a prototype coming with a kickstarter, hopefully that kickstarter will be this summer and you’ll get acces to that portion of the game near the end of that kickstarter.
I still don’t understand why there is complaints about that, they are the creator they do as they like. if you don’t like their way of doing it then don’t support it. That’s indie works that’s all. If even big company with huge manpower have to delay their production imagine a small one how have as the same hype from fans.
I’ve been trought so much administration problems to understand how frustrating it must be to them not being able to just start their damn campaing.
Be patient young padawans!
6 months ago we didn’t even know people would be interested in our game. We also had full time jobs so keeping the game a secret would have been terrible for us.
The shadows look nice but I hope they don’t come at the expense of something else like (#items, quests, random events, smarter AI, CPU usage). In my experience there always seems to be a trade off between realism content (shadows, water, sky, sun) and immersion content (strategy, armors, weapons, relics, ruins). I like large inventories, exploring, discovering, digging holes, building, altering the landscape and fighting off the bad guys.
Great work, looking forward to playing it.
Looks awesome! This game was begging for shadows like a schoolboy in a candy factory.
I have a question that has been bugging me for weeks.
Will you be able to mine for gold? I want to mine for Gold. I want to hit a gold rush!!!
2 other questions that have been bugging me..
1) Is there any update on horizontal mining “tunneling”?
2) Instead of just digging up dirt, will there be a way you can move dirt from one spot to another?
Thanks, I love you.
Hi there!
There might not be gold, but there will be plenty of stuff that’s just as yummy to dig for. Don’t worry. Tunneling right now is 100% functional, and has been for a while. But right now, we lack the ability to see through the ground (xray vision). So this is the main obstacle we have to solve.
Cheers!
Drugs might let you see through stuff, or bend spoons with your mind?
Maybe make a spherical search radius that make all the voxels within the sphere turn transparent, then you could manually move the camera ‘into’ the mountainside or maybe allow the camera to lock onto the bricktrons point of view??
Very nice!
I can’t wait seeing this game being released. Although I’m not much of the RTS fan, this stuff really gets my blood pumping.
And as for that afternoon, hope you didn’t hurt yourself too much? Get well soon anyways!
I don’t really care how long it takes.
I really enjoy just reading the blogs and seeing what you are up to and pictures of what has been happening.
I am not saying I don’t want the game to come out, My head is steaming with anticipation for the game and I want it to come out as soon as possible.
CASTLESTORY FTW!!!!!!!!!
PLS MAKE A invdef version like Mojang did to minecraft!
I’m hoping you would get enough money to give out the game free to everyone as I don’t have a credit card
I’m sure you could go to the store and buy a Visa Gift Card, I think that would work.
I thought that canada had the coolest weather
Just wondering, is it really that difficult/computationally expensive to blur shadows more as they get further away from the source? I’ve seen 3d renders do this, although they do take a while because they make it look really good, but I’ve never seen a game do this, not even with baked shadows. It would look so much better. Of course, I have no idea whether or not this is possible. The game is looking great though!
This game is looking more amazing every week!
I hope 20 will be our lucky number for the kickstarter! :D
I’m having a hard time holding off my friends as to when the kickstarter will be. Each time I have to say, “Next Friday” they grow more weary.
OMG IT WILL BE OUT IN 1MONTH AND 15 DAY PROBABLY !!!!!!!
Don’t think it will be so soon!Have patience!
Wow, calm down man. Haha do you yell at people on these posts to find patience? I’m sure the game is a ways off yet, but I think, as I said, the kickstarter is right around the corner (next couple posts). But don’t interpret this as an angry response, I agree with you people need to be patient, and your earlier posts that they should’ve kept it a secret is spot on. But could you cool down a bit?
Lol yes!
We want more videos from Castle Story!
Looks awesome, its like you took the idea of Minecraft and modeled it into something even more awesome than Minecraft could ever be, because they focus too much on pointless things like Wolves, that block you all the time in your movements or underground strongholds, which you will never be able to find without x-ray textures, instead of improving things they’ve already implemented, like this terribly ugly Village Generator, which needs to be improved badly…anyways I got off topic…I’m really looking forward to a first tryout
Greetz. tHE_fREAK aka freakofaustria
P.S.: I love flying islands to build on ;)
Hey You! Yea You! Get blogging! Even if you have nothing to show! Even if you just sat around playing video games! I don’t mind! Blog…blog like it’s your first time. Tell me how your day has been and what funny thing your dog did this week! I look forward to your blogs :)
I wish I had time to sit around and play video games! I can hardly remember what an xbox controller feels like anymore.
In the meantime, I have blogged. Now rejoice!
haha yay
