Have you ever seen a blog explode so utterly under the weight of its own users? I’m starting to think that this website is becoming entertaining not just for the content we post, but for how often it falls apart.

I mean, seriously? Is this for real? The picture to the right is 2048 pixels high, and it’s zoomed out 6% ( 0.06 times the real size!!! ) And it’s only slightly more than half of the final amount of comments we got in the end (we stopped being able to screenshot the page after a while, due to memory problems).

And then, when the comments started stacking on top of each other, that was the final straw. We had completely lost control. So please, understand if sometimes we cannot answer within a reasonable time, if at all. It’s not because we don’t want to…
Strangely, I get this macabre feeling of understanding for the characters in The Walking Dead: being quickly and utterly overwhelmed from all directions.

Oh… right.
So yeah! The prototype is now out in the wild! And let me tell you, that release day was a roller-coaster of emotions! There was no doubt, two days before the release, that the game wasn’t ready at all. There was at least 10 times as much bugs as there are currently. Most of the UI was still in Photoshop, waiting to be included. And there was no main menu to speak of (it was added mere hours before the release). So Tuesday morning, we showed up with plenty of food and coffee to last us for two days, and got ready for a marathon of coding and art (feels a lot like a game jam, actually).
Anyway, boy are we glad we got the prototype out. But it would have been a real nightmare if we didn’t have this totally kick-ass community to help us out. The folks over at CSO really put in sweat and blood in ensuring a smooth release. And we ALMOST succeeded! Which is incredible to say the least, considering the resources we had (not a lot).
We really really need to thank some people specifically:
You guys rock!
Aaahaa. Yeah… The bugs.
Well, what did you expect? We’ve been saying the game isn’t ready since like forever. This is why we’re calling this a prototype; it’s not even good enough to be called an alpha. But that’s EXACTLY the reason we still needed to release it. We selected you guys, a small group of dedicated prototype backers (and Beta backers soon enough) to help us iron out the gameplay. This game has SOOO MUCH potential, it’s crazy, and we want to share the experience of designing it with you.
The amount of knowledge we’re getting from watching videos of you guys playing the game (and struggling with the controls) is hilarious but enlightening. We’re getting instant feedback on our own failures and on how to fix the gameplay.
So what should you do?
On our side, we’re already working on a patch. It will take time, because we don’t want to create more bugs by patching the game wrong. But this patch will pave the way to a more active development cycle in the coming month, where we will take the prototype as far as we can.
If you have an account related problem. Please know that we cannot guarantee a quick response. This is what our inbox looks like at the moment:

This said, here is a list of common problems and what can be done to fix them: https://castlestory.net/faq.php
Please only email [email protected] if you have
Here’s a couple of tips, though, just for now:
That’s normal. If you are a backer, we already added you in our database and assigned a serial key. The registration process is only for the gift accounts. If you remember, we asked you to register a month or so ago on http://castlestory.net , if you haven’t done it yet. please do it now.
That’s normal, in order to comply with Paypal, we had to ask you a month ago. So if you don’t remember your username, enter your email address into http://castlestory.net and it will give you your username. If you need a password you will have to request a password reset here: https://castlestory.net/accounts/reset.php
Yes we know, that message is not very clear, it only mean that your username and password don’t match the one in our database. So verify your user and reset your password. Sometimes, the connection will also time out if there’s a lot of traffic, you can try later to see if there is still a problem.
and finally,
We didn’t have time. Tutorials are for finished games. We kinda hoped the community would explore the game and build a knowledge base to build its own tutorial. We plan on doing a quick gameplay walk-through in the coming week, though.
In the meantime, here’s a few tips I can say, just off the top of my head:
Make sure your tool matches the block you want to remove (brick to brick, half-brick to half-brick) and Shift-Click on the block. Your cursor should turn yellow. The same actually applies to real blocs. Whenever you Shift-Click on a brick, it tells the Bricktrons in the group to break that block.
Press Delete from time to time, physics particles (gravel) tends to accumulate, and that takes a lot of GPU juice. Be warned, though, pressing Delete will also delete loose bricks and logs.
It’s buggy right now. You need the columns and beams to be in place before being able to put your plank blueprints. The game doesn’t detect the column blueprints as being eligible for building on. We’ll fix it soon.
Not much to say about this soundtrack. I just discovered this guy last week, and I love it!
.
Cheerios amigos! See you next week. Have fun!
you guys are amazing! keep up the great work.
i love you guys!!!
agreed… we’re all the more excited about the potential for Castle Story… onward! :D
Does anyone know what day the Beta will be released? I had a quick look but can only find “decemberish”. Is this still true?
i think it’s gonna be somewhere in February.. that’s what i heard.
I’m Sure You Guys Are Working Hard At It, Please do remind and update us when the beta is released >_<
Been waiting forever for the day to come, and also I don't think we mind if there are a some bugs in the game~ like you guys said, we can help iron it out!! Great Work You Guys!!!
I agree with Jacob!
Regarding your flood of comments: if you are looking for a good way to curate suggestions you may want to implement some sort of user-based voting system like Reddit, Digg, or any number of popular websites have. This would enable popular user suggestions to get the attention the community feels they deserve, and reduce the number of unimportant messages you need to filter.
Fantastic work on rushing out the Prototype. I have been toying with all the aspects of it, and it seems so professional. :o I’ve been trying out many alphas for many games lately, and this pre-alpha release really stands out for its distinguished aura of effort. Keep it up. ^_^
I read this and for a moment was confused thinking I had posted it XD
Hey Sauropod.
I was wondering.
Will there be a 2nd release of the prototype? Or maybe later, a launcher for the game, so that we can get updates and bugfixes?
I was hoping, because of the crickets.
Well they did say they were working on a patch so I would think they plan on updating the prototype, im not sure how they plan on doing it, or for how long they plan on releasing patches…but I hope that the prototype gets frequent patches until beta comes out. That way the devs don’t have to do much ingame bug hunting and will make for a smoother and more productive beta release…just my thoughts tho…
“But this patch will pave the way to a more active development cycle in the coming month, where we will take the prototype as far as we can.”
I don’t know about you, but this sounds to me like they’re going to be continuing development on the prototype as they move forward in the development cycle.
Even with a challenging time learning the interface and a few well documented bugs, the prototype was extremely impressive, and I reacted to the occasional crash with “well, that’s to be expected”.
Thanks for posting this update, it’s great to know how things have been from your perspective and what’s coming next. Attitude is everything and Sauropod’s is in the right place!
I agree. Even though there were bugs to be found and struggles to be dealt with, the game has done so wonderfully well with living up to the style and concept that the blogs have made it seem it would have. I love it! And all the bugs and crickets! :P (And that one image.. for stockpiles.. I love that too. :D )
Yeah. The only thing i had trouble with was getting rid of phantom blocks. It was rather confusing, but they just fixed it for me.
Thanks guys loving the game already.
I have a list of bugs on the way, to have to finish gameplay first so I know I’ve got everything.
All sounds good! There are a few people creating tutorials at the moment if you want to showcase them or something if you don’t have time to make one.
DrNickidge has made a few already: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aq-wwnf3tQg&feature=plcp
CocoSmackdown has some as well: http://www.youtube.com/user/cocosmackdown
There are some more if you search for castle story tutorials in YouTube :)
The only thing I’d like to know, is will you be updating the prototype as you continue to develop the game or is the prototype a one shot deal until the alpha is released? Just want to know because really the prototype is basically unplayable and does NOT display the game in a good light like all of your videos did while you were collecting the $700,000.00 from everybody that bought into it.
That is kind of what a prototype is. An example. An idea of what could be. The videos are just that, videos. The final game will be what you judge the 700,000 on. We all bought into the dream, so give it time to develop.
Basically unplayable my ass. So I spent 8 hours “not playing” the game last night?
Did you even read this article?
“On our side, we’re already working on a patch. It will take time, because we don’t want to create more bugs by patching the game wrong. But this patch will pave the way to a more active development cycle in the coming month, where we will take the prototype as far as we can.”
Calm down, gain some perspective, quit your whinging and learn how to get around the major bugs like the rest of us have by READING and LEARNING via the forums, castlestory subreddit, youtube videos, livestreams and wiki.
I agree. I spent 10 hours of playing the game. Finding bugs and getting ways of getting past them. Learning and figuring out stuff i now feel like a proud scientist.
Great job you guys, im behind you all the way.
If I could vote this up I would! Fantastic comment.
Have you set the graphics settings to full? It defaults at the lowest settings. As far as I can tell, it looks visually the same. They didn’t show much gameplay at all. Please remember that they’re still early in development.
Testers from any game company would probably be pretty impressed with how much these guys have been able to accomplish… games do not look glamorous until far into the development process :-)
As someone who has done early game testing both for semi-large companies and for friends/friends of friends that are creating their own games, i can wholeheartedly attest to that last part. This is one of the most put-together games i have ever played in prototype.
I’m not even bothered by the bugs really, been spending 3-4 hours per sitting and even on the one time the menu didn’t open so i couldn’t save, i wasn’t even angry, i was excited that i would take a new path and try something different. Underground throne rooms go!
I do not agree at all. The game is stable considering its a prototype and lots of things actually work. The controls and interface needs work as it not super intuative.
Good work guys!
I agree that the controls aren’t super intuitive, but once I learned them they were pretty effective. Depending on what gets added in the future, this may or may not be the best control design.
Keep the good work guy! So far there is not much i can say more then you are already for me one of the best (if not THE best) Game devs ever. You are truly open to the community, you hard work and enjoy yourself on doing that game.
Really i’m pretty happy that Sauropod studio exist and not only for Castle Story but for future game that i hope you gonna make in the future.
I clearly hope you a big success cause your game is already such a great game and its not even on alpha. So i’m pretty sure you gonna make it really popular.
Thx guy :)
Haha you guys are awesome, keep up the good work! (and good luck on building a reliable AI!)
I understand so much after playing 10 minutes of the game! The controls are better than anything I expected… I just have a coue problems with the Bricktrons being a bit buggy with the stockpile.
Oh hi! Nice job getting the prototype out sounds like some fun clutch coding went down.
Be sure to give yourselves a pat on the back. You’ve all definitely earned it.
Yeesh. I saw this after the kickstarter closed and I am sad I did not get it. I’ve got aspirations of my own to become a designer and programmer for games; I’ve just read a few of the comments on here and sometimes it looks a little grim but some people don’t seem to understand that it’s a prototype… I know I spend a lot of time just clicking the “build and run” button in codeblocks after changing one line. I know the feel. I wish I could get in on this!
I look forward to catapult battles between islands on multiplayer.
and how come none of bricktrons are black? i find this racially offensive
Well, they’re not white as well…
Neither male or female
I LOVE YOU GUYS! THANK YOU FOR MAKING THIS AWESOME GAME! I like how you didn’t make a tutorial because it leaves everything to the imagination. Sure, it’s buggy, but that’s the fun of it being a prototype!
I can’t thank you enough and all my friends from Minecraft got instantly jealous of me when I told them about the game and that they’re too late too get it :D I hope you’re able to get a stable multiplayer working when it’s in Beta :D
Thanks again :D I’mma go play some more of it :D
If you would consider the “prototype” an “alpha release” you might start calling it an “alpha” hopefully the newbs to the software development process might have at least heard that term an expect “no where near stable” release. But then again my experience with some in the Minecraft community it might be too much to hope for.
This is just awesome feeling, kind of like we’re launching an expedition to an uncharted land :)
Great work guys!
YAY! i’m on the blog!
yeah, the game is really buggy, waiting for a patch. hope it will be soon!
kills the bugs! they don’t deserve to live!
also, a big bug is actually REALLY annoying me, after a while I cn open the menu, so I can’t save, I can’t switch to debug mode,…
but the game is kinda really cool! It will reallly be fun without thoses bugs
Always, ALWAYS, use the ESC key to open AND close the in game menu. To “System button” menu or “return to game” item. Only ESC. I had the same bug as you, and once I paid attention to only use the ESC key, everything was “fixed”.
okay, I’ll remenber! thanks!
Well..; I just tried…
I just spawned a large amount of bricktron with de dubg mode, then i wanted the reswitch to normal mode but I coulnd’t access to menu…
maybe : DON’T SPAWN TOO MANY BRICKTRONS!
Hey, the game is great. :D Really, really fun. The main problems I think are the save/load problems and the doubling bricktrons and losing resources after load. I’m not to bothered about no sound (I’m on a Mac) but one thing that would be nice once you’ve sorted out the main bugs is to give the bricktrons a little animation when standing still. Just like breathing in and out or something. It would make it seem less like the game had frozen.
This game is awesome! Even with the bugs it’s still fun to play. I love the main mechanic of layout out where you want things to be built and watching them do it. Like Dwarf Fortress but with Minecraft graphics, and a far smaller learning curve.
This all looks great. I’m not prototype tester and I understand your frustrations upon load of work still has to be done, but I still hardly wait beta to come out.
+ since you’re offering the game Humble Bundle store you might reconsidder to put the soundtrack into next Humble Music Bundle. I like it so I’d gladly give you some extra $ for it if participating in one of those Humble Bundles. :)
Great work so far no matter how many bugs and stuff still need to be fixed. As long as you’re that enthusiastic you’ll do everything in apropriate time, have no doubt. Keep up the good work.
Hi,
I like the game (and the prototyp)! The final game will be realy cool! I got no trouble with the controls, and bricktrons rocks, love this guys!
Just carry on!
I’m really happy with the prototype and can’t wait to play the next versions of the game.
I was a little disappointed at first, but after seeing a few videos made by other backers on youtube, I realized that it was only the “weird” controls fustrating me. So I gave it another try and now I find it really great.
I’ll probably post one topic on the forums to give you my feedback but overall it’s really good for a prototype.
Good luck for the dev and keep the good work guys, you’re holding a wonderful idea.
Congratulations guys!! I’m sure you’re all completely mind blown and speechless from this ordeal haha On a game related note, I enjoy the prototype quite a lot!! Even with the bugs and such. The controls were easy enough to figure out. I love everything about it so far! Can’t wait for more :D
I love this game. Yes, it’s buggy, but it’s a pre-alpha prototype, and that’s fine. I’m still having fun. I can’t wait to follow and participate in the development of this game.
Congratz mostly that you survived it as good as possible! I guess that means for us 30$ backer, no chance for the prototype. no luck, no extra pledging (to 45$) .. just waiting for some months more hoping that the beta comes out soon.. well waiting for more.
Hey, cmon.
We were registering back these days yea, but we were not asked our personal info back these days!!!
So, no credit island name, casual name, and other stuff.
“It’s not even good enough to be an alpha”
Oh for f-cks sake. This is the point when you start firing programmers. Beta was expected in October, and you’re still working on getting to ALPHA? Vaporware.
No, you’re wrong. The beta was never expected in october, the prototype was and itreleased on time. Vapourware? Highly unlikely.
Mhmmm…Correction. Beta was never once said to be in october time. Beta is supposedly coming out in 2013 around Feb , March time.
How can you say it “was never once said to be in October”???
This was what it says and said on Kickstarter when I made my pledge.
Get the BETA at a pre-release price and get your name in the final game. The BETA WILL BECOME THE FINAL GAME, we are going to update that version to you for free, forever until the final release.
Estimated delivery: Oct 2012
They explained in a couple Dev blogs that the October thing was when rewards as a whole would START coming out. Ie, it’s currently October and we just got the Prototype. It’s the same thing as when they talked about how they HAD to put out the username entry/signup system so early even though there was nothing to use it with, Kickstarter (or paypal, i can’t remember) required them to have delivered Something by that date.
And anyhow, this is how Kickstarter projects work. It says estimated delivery for a reason, because the projects you fund are almost always by people that don’t have gigantic production departments. The whole reason for the kickstarter is that they need some start up money to help them out because they can’t do it on their own. So without that production department, Kickstarter rewards are often late or delayed past the promised date. It’s almost a rule, but funding a project isn’t a purchase or transaction that you would expect to be delivered precisely on date, it’s helping someone complete their dream/project by helping them out, and then getting some rewards when they finish it. I can stress that last part enough.
I love it so far and I’m confident that the final version will be amazing. Keep it up guys!
I’m having a lot of fun with the prototype, bugs and all. The biggest issue right now is saving/loading, please patch that as a priority. Other bugs can be fixed in time but this issue is the only thing that stops me from playing more right now as it takes too much time to restart every build.
Congrats and thanks for getting the prototype out regardless! !
Inb4spacenarwhal.
Despite bugs, this prototype has been a blast. I can’t wait for the beta / full release of this master piece.
I was one of those last minute kickstarter backers, and I have to say that although I couldn’t play the game until today (sad internet issues) I will be expecting one of the best prototypes ever from what I’ve read. Congratulations to Sauropod Studio for making this the best it t could be, and building up from that into something much greater. And congratulations to the rest of you backers, as from what I’ve read, it seems you all are getting as much fun out of it as we all have imagined. Thank you Sauropod Studio!
Wait – only 241?! We’re just getting warmed up; what do you expect from such an awesome game concept!
Its a amazing, a download that and play as much i can
i don’t use the load/sabe because… some bugs, but i still testing things, like roofs style in-side rooms style and others stuffs
Thanks for your’s create prototype, if the prototype is this… i can’t create in my mind the final game, because i freakout playing the prototype
don’t rush the final version, make this more perfectly as possible, because i like the quality of this project
sorry for bad ingles but i don’t use my translation sistem… this sistem need time and i use my time now to explore the prototype!!!
I run on 1.4 Ghz CPU, 1RAM and Nvidia GeForce 5200 and my game is really, really lag. No mater the resolution and the VFX at fastest it still runs slow.
Will there be some kind of SVN set up?
Wee more comment fun, great game, had lots of fun already, can’t wait for more!
I absolutely love your soundtrack of the week! I’ve discovered so many cool people through you! *highfive*
YAY!
(Space Narwhal not available, think he’s playing the prototype day and night ^^)
I have been having lots of fun playing this awesome prototype! Buggy and frustrating as it can be, it is still fun.
I am really looking forward to watching this game develop,,, and the first patch, haha!
Keep up the great work guys!
I’m not going to forget about that hug you guys promised. You will have to deliver one of these days.
Can some please help me I emailed sauropodstudio two times already with my problem. After the Kickstarter , Kickstarter sent me a message saying my mastercard was rejected AFTER I threw out the card. It was a pre-paid card so was I scammed out of a hundred dollors? I have the information saved on my email account. Will someone help me so I can play the prototybe I paid for the hundred dollor reward Thanks.
Hi Jacob, your best bet would be to contact Kickstarter or Amazon payments. Since they do the transactions, there is little we can do over here. I know this sucks, this sort of thing happened to me more than once. :S
We love you, Sauropod! You so cool!!!
I still can’t seem to firgure out how to download the prototype. Can anyone help?
You need to be a backer, if so they sent you a mail which redirect to a download link. (if you’re a backer and you don’t have this email, contact sauropod studio)
I was just curious if there was any update on when physical kickstarter rewards will be shipped (such as t-shirts)? I haven’t seen anything in any of the updates to-date.
Why are you collecting bugs on a forum? There are plenty of proper issue tracker tools to choose from. I prefer JIRA myself (and you can afford it).
Have you considered using sprints (weekly or biweekly) and making releases at the end of each? Again, a proper tool will help with this (JIRA+GreenHopper or whatever you prefer).
I’m not bothering with the prototype until the basic controls are working, so I hope you will prioritize those.
I agree that it wouldn’t be a bad idea for them to come up with a more organized way to collect bug reports. It might also not be a bad idea for them to release an ongoing roadmap of what they’re working on and what they plan on working on in the future. This would, at least a little bit, help to keep people from suggesting things that they’re already planning.
One point of disagreement, the basic controls DO work. I was playing for hours yesterday. Got the foundations of a castle worked out, chopped down some trees, started a mine. It all worked. There are certainly little stumbling points (occasionally characters get stuck, some UI elements don’t work quite right, etc), but if you’re talking BASIC controls…they’re already in place and working.
Now, do those controls need work? Sure. The camera controls, while workable, are certainly far more complicated than they need to be. But the game is very playable and actually pretty engrossing despite being so basic.
I would just like to point everyone to one of my favorite/most awesome topics on the forums right now. It’s not full or rage/bugs, it’s full of awesome build that people have done, how to make bridges and use planks, just good stuff all around that is making the prototype so much fun. even with the bugs (which aren’t really all that bad to me) i’ve been playing for 3-4 hours per sitting and i love it!
http://castlestoryonline.com/threads/prototype-castle-builds.1576/page-3#post-32518
Sigh seems if you had put 25$ on as a backer and the transaction failed it didn’t revert back to the 20$ backer status guess im gonna have to wait :(
YAY!
There it is!
It makes it all worth it.
And if it doesn’t, there’s something really wrong, or your too busy playing the Prototype!!! I want too play it, but I didn’t but it, now I can’t play it :’(
awesome guys keep up the good work !!!
already addicted to the “buggy” prototype :P
Man! shift click, how could i miss that!!! Anywho, thanks again as always.
haha i see you like my screenshot of of my fort, well i like your game more :D
chaotic :) you should see my computer desk, i guess it my style lol
If this is what the Prototype looks like, then the final version of the game is a guaranteed success!!
You guys are doing a great job!
Great job guys! Thought I’d go ahead and add to the swarm. :P
Oh my, now I’m ashamed for writing to you with my apparently non-existent problem. You can see my e-mail address here, right? Please go ahead and delete my message to [email protected] . I hope this spares you a few minutes. Sorry for bothering you guys! :(
So I think I used the wrong thing for my credit island name when I signed up, but I can’t remember, I know I could probably just email them, but I figured I would ask here first. Is there a way to check/change my Credit Island name?
Credit Island names are for later. As long as you can log in, don’t worry about it.
Okies. Thank you. ^.^
I think you guy do a really good job of community engagement. This is really important to me.
Not sure I really understand the comment about lack of resources, spend the kick starter money and get whatever resources you need.
jeez, knowing the shift click would’ve been really helpful. i was building a bridge in the far right of the start island. the bridge started with a staircase and once i finsihed the block stairs to build a wooden planky bit, i realized that my bridge was heading into the side of a mountain. i still had great fun and i love the bricktron working music!
Please Release Prototype exactly as it is WITHOUT THE CRICKET OMG. SO annoying.
I Love You
I’d like to congratulate you guys on such a great game :) i’ve already wasted so many hours! it would be amazing if I could join the team ;) but sadly I doubt it hahaha. Good luck guys :) This game has Great Potential :P
And btw. My username is Jdfskitz on the Forum if anybody needs to know ;)
I got two copies of the prototype, what do I do to register the second account?
You should have gotten an email. It give you the info for the gift prototype.
If you haven’t received an email then go to the humble bundle website and click lost keys at the bottom of your account page then enter your email address, you should then receive the email related to both of your accounts, this is the process I had to go through.

Thanks I will try that.
Thanks for clearing that up Sauropod Studios, keep up the great work guys and please bring that beta out soon! I can’t wait ;D
Feb/Marchish is the time that the beta comes out approximately, right?
Great work , the prototype is working and this is really cool.
Thanks you
The game is unbearably laggy.
This doesn’t help anyone in anyway. Please only post helpful / insightful comments.
Hey, can anyone tell me how game updates are going to work? do they come out weekly? Do I need to re-download the client files, or will it patch? How will I know that there is an update?
Take it easy, buddy. I think we need to wait about 1 month for the next release of the prototype. They need to fix a lot of things and they’re harvesting bugs and feedbacks from users.
Anyway, the prototype just works. You need to learn some workaround and you’re done.
Look at a funny glitch I found:
I swear there was an entry in the FAQ about castle story’s incompatibility with ESET (fatal error in gc GetThreadContext failed), but it looks like it was removed. Did it get resolved/whitelisted by ESET? Or will I need to ask on ESET’s forum for them to fix/whitelist castles story’s .exe? Adding it to the exclusions page in ESET to the AV/firewall/HIPS settings seems to have no effect. It doesn’t even show up blocked even with the log all options checkmarked.
Now I know what they are talking about. Already like 500 replies.
Nice prototype guys I have been playing it at every oppurtunity other than the obvious bugs I haven’t been having too much trouble with it, for a prototype its pretty good you guys should be pleased with the prototype you put out bugs included its great work.
The one major bug that has been bugging me a rather large bit is when I move then stop moving, it looks like a bricktron dance party.
Any news on Linux version??
:’)

Alright, one thing I can definitely say is that you need some main menu music in the, well, main menu. That thing is as grim as a graveyard… Not really, I just always wanted to say that :P… Seriously, main menu music :)
Hey I know the Prototype has already been released, But what is the Estimated release date for the BETA?
Thank you!
