Here’s the first the episode of Sauropod Studio’s Video Podcast.
Hey guys! It seems like video posts are becoming commonplace in the indie community.
Anyways I would love to see y’all cover different aspects of how y’all work, what you are working on.
In my opinion Zero Point Studio’s Vi-Docs of their game Interstellar Marines are very well put together, y’all should check them out.
It’s way easier that way to show and explain what we are working on, but it need a lot of work of video editing and ect. that’s why we hired Ben. Since I wouldn’t never have the time to do that kind of stuff we definitely needed someone who had experience in that kind of stuff. I’m really happy to see the first episode being that appreciated.
I do not think that the time that I have played the game was wasted in any way, I love Castle Story, but just as much as I love it, it makes me sad because I feel that the community loves it more than the developers.
I do not think that y’all are attempting to make a “cash grab,” I sincerely believe that y’all simply are unsure of how to handle the community and the game at the same time.
But it is ridiculous that after two weeks (and skipping one week) the only progress to report is that you didn’t do anything but make a neat little video. You did release the video of the corruption time lapse, and that was very cool, but evidently we are no closer now to getting anything new.
Do you remember when you told us to wait for refactoring? Do you remember when you told us that after refactoring we’d be getting some new features? Do you also remember when you changed that to “after refactoring and we make our new tool?” Do you remember when you changed that to “after refactoring and we make our new tool and we make our roadmap?” Do you remember when you gave us a glimmer of hope by retexturing the stone stockpile so now I can horde what appears to be gold? Do you remember not releasing anything else save a couple of bug fixes? Yeah. Me too.
I am posting this because I care about this game, it seems fun, and it seems like a totally new concept, not just another pixel 2D game that all the other people make. I am posting this because it is getting old that every time someone points out that there isn’t anything to show for your work, save the small things I mentioned, we get slammed by fan boys on one side, and devs telling us to be quiet and wait on the other end.
So Thierry, I like the idea of Vi-Docs, they are cool, this one was very meh, which is why I suggested looking at how another studio does things, a suggestion that, judging by your response, you skimmed right over. Very unfortunate in my opinion.
I tried my best to be calm and logical in my approach, because I do care about progress, and so I hope that somebody from the studio and realizes that people are very concerned and that we are not all kickers and screamers, but that some of us simply want progress, not excuses and “Loading, please wait…”
thank you very much for your patience and being calm it very appreciated.
It’s true that the first video was short, I won’t give any escuse about that but I will only tell that the more it will goes, better they will became. Of course it’s not the only thing that was done in the past two weeks. But most part of it are fixes and updates about what we did in the past few weeks.
I remember when we asked you guys to be waiting for the refactoring, and it gave it’s fruits I can assure you. It might not be visible on the player side but it give us the possibilité to add new tools for development without breaking the whole game. We also just Hired Kim (we haven’t done the presentation) who will jump in to create all the tools we need so that all the other devs can return on features for you guys. Without the refactoring it would have taken weeks of training to understand how the code worked. I totally understand that people are getting impatient and I can just hope that this new video prodcast will help showing the progress we are making.
I’ll give a look at other videos with Ben, thanks for the suggestion
Can’t wait for the roadmap to be up! It seems very interesting!
Another 2 weeks gone by and we still havn’t learned a 1 fucking new thing about this game.
Maybe instead of wasting time building roadmap websites, you could actually add a new texture, new unit,
or some new gem to the fucking game.
My patience is up. Fuck Sauropod Studio. I gave you 2 years of my life and you gave me the finger.
Probably not the most tactful way to put it but unfortunately a lot of us feel this way. You guys ask us to wait two weeks because you are releasing something huge, and all it turns out to be is a 2 min video explaining the video and then a 15 second glimpse of the roadmap. So basically nothing… This is supposed to be Ben’s only responsibility and this is all that has been produced after 14 days? The following for this game dwindles every single day and it seems like Sauropod doesn’t quite care. You guys are in a “Whatever, who cares is a few people leave us” but soon that few will be most and from there it will be all your followers. You guys have a huge team now, a big office and a ton of cash behind you. Take RUST’s rewrite they are doing. They are letting the community follow step by step and releasing a shit-ton of content about it each week AND they still work on new content. You guys needed 2 years of solitude and silence to get yours done, and there is still nothing. I just have no way of expressing how disappointing this whole process has been for everyone I know.
Well we changed the whole way of communicating with our fans (Videos instead of huge blogpost and a roadmap), we created a roadmap because it was asked a lot. Internally we know where we are heading but it’s not always that simple to structure it in a way that anyone can comprehend. That have been an huge exercice of strucure for us and even now we feel that a lot as to be left behind to explain how everything is inter conected. It’s a bit wierd now that apparently we don’t care since we actually do so much that we take some of our ressources internally to make that happen.
Also, just a quick reminder, that we were some of the firsts project to hit Kickstarter or Early Access, someone had to start it and we did, it also mean that a lot of other developpers have the chance now to learn from our errors. We weren’t prepared or had the structure in place to show the developpement process around the world. We are taking our time to change that.
Oh no, an indie game that takes more than two years to develop, what a disaster!
I, for one, don’t give a shit about idiots like you leaving, at least now there is that much less whine
” we know where we are heading but it’s not always that simple to structure it in a way that anyone can comprehend”
way too go thierry! calling the community stupid!
“That have been an huge exercice of strucure for us and even now we feel that a lot as to be left behind to explain how everything is inter conected. It’s a bit wierd now that apparently we don’t care since we actually do so much that we take some of our ressources internally to make that happen”
uhm, back to 1, i dont think that the community is unable to comprehend the things that are going on, but what exactly are you trying to say with -2-? are you able to explain things in plain english please?
“Also, just a quick reminder, that we were some of the firsts project to hit Kickstarter or Early Access, someone had to start it and we did,”
your point….? we just want a PLAYABLE and ENJOYABLE game,
“also mean that a lot of other developpers have the chance now to learn from our errors”
granted, the whole team is human, we make mistakes. but it feels like you are not learning from them!
that is what frustrates me the most. I spend money and time in this game of yours, but i just dont know if i want to play it anymore, out of principle, because the way this game is made IS bad. a perfect example of how NOT to do things. keeping the community on a leash.
“We weren’t prepared or had the structure in place to show the developpement process around the world. We are taking our time to change that.”
sigh… just do whatever you want… I dont care anymore… i just wish i could have my time and money back.
To answer your #2: No they can’t, as they’re not native speakers. It’s been stated before that these blog posts are translated and edited (and posted) by a third party. ..and as far as I understand, they’re not doing an open source project, and are thus not required to teach us 100% of their inner workings.
Though I do agree that they’ve taken a lot of time and there’s not been much development in actual gameplay. Luckily there’s always Dwarf Fortress to sink your impatience in, so that other people can take as much time as they need to make their products polished. ;P
This is the Internet. I guarantee someone can translate what they say in french to english. The language barrier thing is just a poor excuse right now not to release any info of their game.
Here’s the history of their Roadmap if you’re interested: http://www.reddit.com/r/CastleStory/comments/2ah3f7/sauropod_studio_video_podcast_ep01/civ16g8
It’s taken them more than a year to present a roadmap. And we’re at the same point we were a year ago. IE, we have to freaking clue what’s going to be added short term.
??? seriously your blaming your language skills omg really? i mean i love this game but any thing from french can easily be translated to English copy and paste to fucking Google translate and we will still under stand come on guys
1-2 Never said the community was stupid. I only tried to explain that every feature is connected together, having to put everything visually in a basic 3 level design (graphic/modeling/big corruptron) was more complicated than it seem. There is a lot of features that are interdependent.
3-4 My point is: I don’t see the point of comparing us to other games like Rust. We were asked for a better way of communicating, you can’t tell we haven’t learned or listen here.
i kind of have to agree with anonmous tho,
its kind of feels like i paid for a subscription to read updates for a game.
actual gameplay is not part of it… things break too easy, and the maps available by the developers are still the same.
just pick your words more carefully thierry :P if you say anything negative on the internet (saying someone is not being able to understand something being the pont here) will cause frustrated people to react.
i just hope something exciting happends before i lose my intrest aswel, all my friends have given up on this game. i sometimes look when im bored at work.
but i actually never play the game,..
1: So most of the people who are reading this can perfectly understand processes that the devs have studied on a college level for years? I doubt it.
2: As it has been said, they are not native english speakers, and if this was in french, noone would follow it.
3: Their point is that they have a lot of unexpected responsibilities and extra work because of it, which is causing delays.
4: You seem to think that you screaming at them on this blog will make them work faster, which is moronic
5: Glad to see you leave, don’t come back
So this is what has been worked on in the last 2 weeks in the studio?
Has there been any sort of game progress since 2 weeks ago? Your new method of communicating doesn’t even mention the game or anything that has happened.
Everyone was expecting something big for this 100th blog post, your PR guy Saurobox even said it himself on the Castle Story subreddit, and you guys come out with this?
Are you even trying anymore?
Now I see you want to do this type of garbage once a month only?
QUOTE: The podcast is the blog. Or, more accurately, the podcast is replacing the blog.
Now, tentatively, what we’re talking about doing is a monthly schedual. Ideally, the next podcast will come a -little- sooner, so we can sync it to the beginning/end of the month. Either the last Friday of a month or the first Friday.
RIP any sort of accountability you guys had.
Why the hell would you need 2 PR guys if you’re only releasing information 1 time per month???
Yes the Podcast AND the Roadmap are a replacement of the weekly blog which became more of a burden, as you have noticed before. The medium we used wasn’t good enough to show and explain the developement process of Castle Story. We think with videos, it will be way more easier for us to show the ”behind the scene” of Castle Story.
Now I see you want to do this type of garbage once a month only?
You said it, it was becoming garbage, you should be happy we are making changes about it so it won’t be anymore.
Also there is 1 PR guy, not 2, not sure where you got that info.
Since you won’t let me reply to you replying to my own comment..
So instead of having 4 weeks of blog post you’re going to make a 5-10 minute video for the whole month? You already had problems showing us what you did in a week’s time and now you want to limit that even more?
[QUOTE] You said it, it was becoming garbage, you should be happy we are making changes about it so it won’t be anymore. [END QUOTE]
You guys don’t have a track record of delivering on your promises, so forgive me if I don’t believe you for one second.
[QUOTE] Also there is 1 PR guy, not 2, not sure where you got that info. [END QUOTE]
Saurobox and Ben. That’s 2. Jesus you don’t even know your own staff? From the blog post about Ben:
[QUOTE]With Kyle, I will manage some of the social media platforms available out there. [END QUOTE]
“WITH KYLE”… I will manage etc.
that’s still one 1 PR guy and one community Manager. We hired Ben to have someone internally in the studio to get the information out. Unfortunately it was a bit more difficult to do it with Kyle since he’s living away. Ben take a bit of the community management but on a different level.
Sorry about that confusion.
That was Kyle’s job before Ben got there.. Community Manager is the same as PR guy. they’re the face of the company and the online presence. If you want to stick to that definition though there’s 2 CM (you and Kyle) and one PR guy (Ben)..
Now explain to me your reasoning for having a 2-minute video encompassing 2 weeks worth of work? How is this communicating more effectively? The video blog didn’t even have any new information. We’ve heard about the roadmap before. We’ve known it wasn’t ready (from one of your blog comments 2 weeks ago).
Your blog posts contained 5 paragraphs of information, your video didn’t even have new information or even more than one minute of old information, how is that better?
Please don’t give me the “this is a new thing, that’s why we made it short”. You’ve had two weeks to do this. Kyle said himself new stuff was to be shown in this 100th post. Nothing was shown that we didn’t already know about.
Thank you for speaking up for the rest of us. I wish you strength and patience in the (apparently) lengthy endeavour!
Sauroguys, PLEASE, give me more of that time-lapse… That thing is just gorgeous!!!!!
I’m really looking forward to the 2nd part (the low poly mesh).
Just a question. I saw that you chose the 3D-Coat as modeling tool (I never tried it).
The price is really low compared to 3Ds Max or Maya (Max being my tool of choice since ever).
Do you recommend it? Some pros and cons, maybe?? =D
Actually we use 3D-Coat for the High Res Modeling, we import that into 3Ds MAX to produce a lower resolution one that will get into the game. I’m not completely sure but I think we only use the normal maps to create a character with more details in it.
I could try to have Germain to jump in this discussion to give more details about it, but you can also contact us directly with email, I’ll be sure to forward your question directly to him when I get in the office tomorrow. firstname.lastname@example.org
Hey guys, the roadmap looks awesome!
I cant wait to check it out.
Personally I have a job, so the money I payed for this game, and to help some developers follow their dream was really no biggie, I mean, who complains about $30 they spend on an early access game. Money well spent.
And I also have a life, so I enjoy being able to come back to sauropod ever few weeks and see what you’re working on. It’s refreshing and always interesting.
Don’t mind the haters. You don’t want those kind of people in your fan base anyway.
<3 ILY and stuff
Right, Stop that! It’s silly!
Quite frankly, I despair at the internet naysayers out there that want to drag everyone else down with their negativity
Why complain about something they claim not to care about?
If they truly have given up all hope on the project then why are they even visiting this site?
Is it simply to try to spread their discontent?
Of what benefit is that to them or the reader?
When they claim to have “given years of their life” to this project, they completely fail to list even one element of the design that they have had a hand in developing.
If all they’ve done for the last year or two is sit in front of their computer and wait for someone else to develop a game so they can sit in front of their computer some more then they have problems that go beyond the scope of this post.
Arguing about job titles and company structure when one of you isn’t even employed by the studio seems pointless and dare I say it, Silly.
I for one am confident that the devs are willing to listen to both useful suggestions and constructive criticism.
But for the naysayers out there that do nothing more than moan and complain, stop wasting everyones time, yours, the devs, and everyone else’s. The exit is that way, please don’t hesitate to use it.
There may be a bunch of impatient people who want the time and money back, but they do not realize it takes time to create and update a game constantly. For an example; Minecraft. Minecraft’s developer team consists of many people while Castle Story has not that many. Getting an early access game can be very rewarding, if only you give the developers time.
Maybe you should first fix basic issue in game..
1. all yellow guys go to build one item… if we plan 1 brick and 9 wood, and 3 yellow guys, the all pick up brick and go to place where they should put 1 brick… Why? Why not only one guy take brick and other take next job from list…
It is so hard when we have list of task code, that first pick up first taks, second guy pick and 2dn taks,… end so one?
2. when you fix issue connected with cleaning up task, and give use posibility to creat tunel by task – right now it doesn’t work…
Now feature are not so important if old one not work correctly..
wait is the big corruptron going to be added to the game?
It will be in 2 years.
Most likely in a few or several weeks. They have the model, just that they need to texture it, add the hit box, and code it.
Yeah it’s only going to take another 2 years, then maybe after that another 2 years to add some sort of other content. and then another 2 years.. etc…
I hope this game releases before Jesus comes back. Hell we might be able to play a game with him.
Some people here are just not smart enough to understand the proces of game development. Guys, there doing there best to get everything to work and get new stuff in the game. I think the Roadmap is an excelent idea because this way all the people that only want new things in the game can now see how far the progress is.
Im very glad they haven’t put any new stuff in the game, this means they are improving the game and engine to get new stuff quicker.
And yes, lets say they would add like 20 new things into the game, all of the people that complain now will be more angry because it will add more bugs, wich they can’t fix in a short time because the foundation of the game is all messed up. GIVE IT TIME. Every day they are improving the code, the less bugs and frustration there will be when new stuff is added.
To Sauropod, thanks for making this awsome game! Take as much time as you need, and thanks alot for the awsome roadmap, it looks realy great an easy to work with !
it has nothing to do with missing experience in programming or project management of the supporters.
The problem is that there are announcements that everyone is waiting and hoping for. But the team can not hold the expectations.
Most people get disappointed everytime they are waiting for new stuff.
The problem is not the deadline or the announcment it self, the problem instead is the time that passed by and the the outcome is very little compared to that time.
Some time back in the steam forums i read that the “about” page will be updated.
Still no update to that and no one takes the responsiblity for it.
Box said as a reason that some of the team members dont want ther picture on the net, thats ok.
But hey, every forum or other side as a “anonymous” picture for that, at least be creative and use some brickton-pictures.
Instead of telling us again that you did this and that and you had no time, keep your word instead of making excuses over and over again.
Take a pen and paper and write down what you say you will do and then add a person to this task and get it done.
The about page is really nothing super complicated. To be honest this is only the tip of the iceberg.
A while ago when the “tutorial” was released everyone hoped that from now on we get new stuff, but thats not happening.
Instead you start a hype about 100th blog entry and what we get for the time of waiting?
I really hope that you explain to us what you do all day. Personally I dont care if it is by text, video or audio.
To be honest, i think that nothing will change because the problem is your 3 hours work day – and in 3 hours you cannot do much.
If i would do my job like i “see” how you do yours, I had been fired a long time ago.
I appreciate what you all are doing in the background having experience in the software development / front end user community (not gaming mind you)… That being said….
I think a lot of the hostile comments stem from the lack of information in this EPIC (fail), wait two weeks for it, (NOT) surprising (unless you count disappointment) 100th Blog…
:QUOTE From 99th:
As it says at the very top, this is our 99’th blog entry. We’ve got something special planned for blog 100, and we’re changing exactly how we do it and communicate. In line with that, we won’t be having a blog entry next Friday. The following week, on the 11th, we’ll have Dev-Diary 100.
What’s changing? How’s it going to be different? Well, that would take all the surprise out of it, wouldn’t it? Check in with us on the 11th of July and let us know what you think about the new setup. The change to the blog isn’t the only surprise we’ve got in store.
I have to (painfully) agree with some of the flame that you all did not impress with the new video. The idea of it and (minor) content was interesting BUT it left us with a feeling of dread for the development cycle of a game we all WANT to play. The Road Map looks very good at conveying information (once you FINALLY populate it) and should give (more) instant feedback on the day to day operations…. That being said… Constantly telling us it is (almost) done and just needs content just feels like lip service (or the middle finger to some). We get it, stuff breaks, stuff doesn’t meet deadlines / goals… Just be honest.. We didn’t load any content because……… This that and the other thing broke. Loading content that would have been lost was a waste of time…
Now on to the praise part of this rant…
I think the video will be a better medium for conveying the who/what/why of what is in the road map (provided you release it). I will miss the text blog because it was done in a very professional manner (get that it took time and effort). I want to thank you for that. Maybe a two week VBlog might satisfy more info hungry people but that depends on the road map / road map content.
To that end I would recommend releasing the Road Map AS IS minus content (if the front end is truly ready for prime time). As you add content it will allow us to see where things have been going or are going (plus looks like you are busy busy)…
The other thing that I wondered about watching your video… Is that your LEAN board in the background? Do you all use any LEAN type project management software? Is it tied to your bug tracking system (assuming you have one)? Maybe posting some metrics out of that as a SPRINT is occurring (I am assuming you all are using SCRUM based on this… Yes?) Have you all considered KANBAN / SCRUM management? Depending on your team make up and skills using both methods might speed up the future release process…. Are you all shooting for a release / patch at the end of each SPRINT?
Anyways just some random things I was wondering after watching the (short) vid….
more podcasts please :D
im glad you guys are not raging at the community and thank you for putting up with people shit
+1 internet for you
Yeah, not exactly earth shattering news, is it? This would be like George RR martin saying hes made great progress in his books, only to find out he’s simply updated his blog, which he uses to give updates on his books, on which there is actually no progress made.
No ACTUAL progress has been reported here, this is progress on making updates to progress that has yet to occur. Yo dawg, I heard you like updates so we updated the thing that we update to show you updates. but no actual game-relevant update, sorry.
That being said, I’m still not abandoning the game, just disappointed at the pace. I realize games take awhile, but it REALLY feels like this game has not advanced since I bought it a year or so ago. I’m definitely not frothing at the mouth like “OMG I WASTED MY MONEY YAK YAK YAK”. It’l get there eventually, but this whole community interaction attempt is falling flat for me if all were gonna see is “updates” like this. Or rather the substantial updates are too few and far between “fluff” updates like this one.
sauropod developers, please work on the AI having problems like placing blocks blocking them from being able build further
