Why you ask?
Because we have not been working on the game this week. Rather, we’ve been working really hard preparing our Kickstarter campaign. You see we got approved by Kickstarter during the week, so we can launch whenever we want.
Which means that yes, the Kickstarter has a solid release date:
Friday July 27th 2012, at 10h00 AM (UTC-05:00)
And yes, before you ask, this date is for the beginning of the Kickstarter. Don’t worry, Kickstarters usually last for a month and ours isn’t any different.
That’s 10am for people who live on the east coast, substract three hours if you live in California, and so on. You know how timezones work don’t you?
So yeah, we’ve been calling a lot of people, working on the website, etc. Basically making sure we’ll be able to handle the traffic. We’re only 3-4 people. It’s a lot to handle.
We’ve also been designing t-shirts for the rewards. These will be especially awesome.
Anyway, we are super tired, and we have a busy week ahead of us so we’ll keep this short.

You should set the countdown time to a UTC time stamp. The Countdown shows 10am in Europe, too.

Why wait a week to release the kickstarter? You should have known all along that you would have an increase in traffic. However your increase might not be as many as u think as most people will just watch the trailer on kickstarter. Also do you think releasing the kickstarter on a friday is a good idea? Wouldn’t you want to release it on a monday when more people are sitting at computers instead of out living life? More people at computers means more people talking and reposting and spreading the kickstarter…
Relacks !! If you read the whole blog you will see thqat they are a small team and up to now worked on the game. There is a whole month of mondays and weekends on the net is not as quiet as you think. I think that the moment thay received the go ahead they started the count down.
They have been saying since March that the Kickstarter will be anytime now. Been saying the same thing on a weekly basis now. They have had more than enough time to prepare, can release it now and are buying even more time with this countdown. Is pissing me off as I have been checking every week for it as they have been keeping us baited. I imagine this is what they want, building suspense, but I just feel like they are wasting my time now.
sorry that you feel that way. in the past few weeks people kept asking when it was going to be. Well we have an official date now, kickstarter approved our project thursday and we are now ready to push the red button of doom. We just need this extra week to push up all the t-shirt and distribution thingy and we need to make a press release.
We discussed that for many hours last week, why a friday? well we went with the site stats. we have around 30-60k visit every day except on friday when we have 300-400k. so it is the best time to reach our fans.
We we need that extra week to make call about distribution for example. those calls are very important if we want that everything run smoothly after the kickstarter.
I see your reasoning. But the reason for your friday influx is simply due to your blog posting schedule (which rarely appears friday anyways). If you ran a countdown timer for a few days and landed on a monday I promise you your usual fanbase friday numbers. But best of luck either way.

How splendidly exciting, I have been watching the gradual progression of this game for some time now and simply can not wait to throw some money at it, I have supported developers in the past and some cracking games have been released from them :) Now its the folks at Sauropod’s turn, Can’t wait for the Beta release too, A very exciting prospect indeed!

I will support this game… I hate seing games hitting Appstore or Marketplace, poorly developed, costing 1-10$… then i see this project, which already consumed a LOT of your time… if it is good, you deserve to be rewarded…

So whens the video coming? Hope it’s before the kickstarter, super excited myself but want moar to go on. Plus it would be good to get the drumms going a day or two early :).
For a long time now I have been playing games like the 4 from firefly studios and one like mojamg to build my castles and defend them. One had great building but no real attackers. The other had both but was poorly put together really. Castle Story looks like a smoothe blend between Castle Building and strategy, a combination that has me very excited. I personally feel that this game has a lot of potential, potential to be even more then “just an indie game” as some have said. I will definitely donate to this game because I believe this will only be the start of something bigger. And bigger is saying a lot considered how great this game will be.

P.S. Would there be anything that would pursuade me to go out and expand from an already rock solid castle in the later game?
Of course you would leave! Wouldn’t you want to build a second castle? Then a Third and connect them and make one on a floating Island and connect it with them and etc etc…

Kickstarter is for Game Makers to get funded by their fanbase. When the Countdown ends, you can pay money on the Kickstarter and get AWESOME rewards, like early access (I hope) and T-Shirts

Umm now this game is know from about 4-5 milion gamers.
Minecraft is played by 30 milion and it’s nearly as popular as microsoft :D!!!!
Castle story is very cool game but it’s not enought to beath the 10x intems and varieties of things that minecraft has!

Hi Menekis,
There’s no bug in the countdown. If you change the date/time setting in your computer, the timer will adjust to it accordingly. I found this out last night (refer to my previous post). If you are having issues with the timer, try and change the date to something else, refresh the timer page, then change it back to actual date and refresh again.

Hey guys i think a Thing for the housing of bricktrons could be Making the structures of The shelter to fit The Substantial and specific living space so every house can be built by you but can look different each time. There could also be varied town buildings to make A thriving castle And Amuch fun game than building and defending there could be upgrading and Expanding. As The game improves you could at an option for a “Small world” and expanding rather than a big floating island setting we could choose a normal world thanks for your time and hope you like these This is just a maybe as it improves… Keep up the good work on it and maybe Once a month Have a Q&A on what would be implemented as it goes on … :)

9 Being completely blown away to the point that you are having uncontrollable sweats, neurological symptoms,
nausea, vomiting, and uncontrollable laughter mixed with joy.

So blown away that you find your self dazing in and out of a new dimension of reality. You imagine far off landscapes, tropical beaches, goblins, flying pitchers of Canadian beer, scantly dressed woman, Bricktrons dancing on distant clouds as the sun sets over the horizon of a new world that only could only be imagined by the mind of a child.
A 6 I think, I was hoping they would do this well and everyone had been like
“i am throwing money at screen no game is coming out give me kickstarter now”
and so I was hoping most of those people would translate into
“ok now clicking bottons throwing virtual money to you”
rather than
“lol jk i’m not giving you my money i don’t care that much derp”
As it is there were a ton more people who were waiting for this than showed :)

Can we almost play the game?
So, you managed to gather almost twice the planned amount in what, eight hours? That’s quite a lot, and wait until gaming sites catch wind of this. I won’t be surprised at all if you end up with half million dollars, if not more.
And since I contributed too, I have a question: will there be traps? Dungeon Keeper had traps, Evil Genius had elaborate traps, Dwarf Fortress had insanely elaborate traps, will Castle Story have traps to remotely fend off the Darktrons? I’m not even thinking about Dwarf Fortress/Orcs Must Die level of complication, just simple things like spikes in the floor, automatic arrow chuckers, etc.
Darktrons? Is that the official name? Or just something you made up? Either way I like it. :D

Will there be weather in the game?
It would be cool to have it rain, for example, and the bricktrons have a different set of animations or a few extra animations, like raising a shield over their head to shelter themselves, or walking around looking a bit unhappy/miserable, slightly slouched… or if its really hot and they wipe the sweat off their brow (do evolved rocks sweat?)
Could also have gameplay implications…
Also I think the Q&A should be sooner, or possible one in the next day or in the next few days, then another one when you’d planned at the 2-3 week mark, and one about 3-4 days before it ends…
Congratulations on getting funded on Kickstarter, guys. I’m a professional game programmer and I’ve really enjoyed reading your dev blog; I just contributed to the KS. It must be a really exciting time for you, and I’m almost a little jealous. :)
Now that you have a huge audience there are going to be more eyes on you, which might be hard to juggle with the effort of making the game. Here’s some unsolicited advice but maybe it might be useful.
- Most fans will not understand what it takes to make a game. It’s ok. Don’t be discouraged by people asking for things that are impossible and being upset when they don’t get them. Any community has a silent majority and vocal minority.
- Everyone likes to see tangible progress. There will be weeks when you spend the entire time working on AI bugs or performance optimization. Keep a list of “fan features” and put aside maybe 1 day a week working on little things that are visible.
- The community loves to feel engaged in the 24/7 cycle of what’s going on. But that can be a huge pressure on a small dev team. Don’t feel like you need to spend every day engaging with the community. Set a rhythm and stick to it; maybe a dev blog on Monday, a screenshot on Wednesday and a build update every second Friday. (I think you’re doing this already.)
- One thing which can help people feel engaged without taking up a ton of your time is a webcam.
- It’s likely you have fans that live in Montreal now. You could find someone who was willing to come and have lunch with you, play the build, and post updates about it each week. Having excited, positive people around every once in a while can be really beneficial when you are working super hard.

Will there be a demo of the game for people to play later?
Many people prefer to play a demo in order to pay for it. However, I dont’ know how it would be possible to make a demo of this, since too many features would be like copying the game :P
A demo would come out when the full game is out or maybe even sooner. I bet the demo would only give you a lick of the Castle Story ice cream cone. Maybe 1 map in 1 situation with limits on units and a very limited gameplay. But I’m sure they would release a demo eventually.
